Will your MP address the GP unemployment crisis?

Tackling GP unemployment

GP underemployment and unemployment is a growing issue. Set against a backdrop of growing patient numbers and increasing demands being placed on general practice, it is deeply worrying that skilled, experienced GPs remain unable to find suitable work.

Our recent BMA survey of sessional GPs across the UK revealed that over half (52%) of respondents want to work more hours in the NHS but cannot find suitable opportunities, while 15% of respondents are unable to find any GP work at all.

At a time when patients are struggling to access appointments, it is unacceptable that so many skilled GPs are unable to find work.

What can you do?

We are calling on the Government to make changes to address GP unemployment and in doing so to increase GP availability for our patients. Please use this tool to write to your MP and urge them to support changes that will allow more GPs to work in the NHS.

Email your MP

MPs respond much more positively to emails that include personal experience and concerns.

Please fill out this free text box to include the impact that underemployment or unemployment is having on you and/or your practice. You may also wish to use the BMA calculator to outline how many additional appointments you could provide to patients if not for the current barriers.
